Continuing Professional Development Tools
CPD Tools are of a variety of types designed to facilitate your CPD along the lifelong learning journey. Your CPD portfolio is a tool that should summarise this journey. It should reflect evidence of learning in the areas of skills, knowledge, attitudes, understanding and achievements. CPD portfolios should be for personal use only, 'as a database to collect and collate evidence of both professional and personal development, yours to control, decide what goes in and how the information is formatted' (after Lillyman and Evans 1996).
We recommend that a CPD portfolio includes the following five elements. How you structure your portfolio is down to individual choice and/or local service arrangements.
1) Career History and Current Job Description/Profile
2) Personal Development Plan (PDP) and most current Performance Appraisal
3) Reflection Logs and tools
4) Sample achievements of learning (e.g. research paper, improved client outcomes in practice, design of new rehabilitation programme)
5) Other (e.g. course certificates, letters from users, carers, colleagues, etc)
The College has developed templates that can be used to record your PDP and your reflections on learning (reflection logs). See links below. In addition, further tools to aid this process are also available - see 'Role Undertaken' and ' SWOT' analysis.
